Climate

This area has 2.600 hours of sunshine per year, and it is one of the sunniest in the Mediterranean. The temperature of sea during the summer season is 25° to 27°C. The temperatures (in Celsius) in winter range from -1° to 3°C in the continental zone, from -5° to 0°C in the mountain region, and from 5° to 10°C in the coastal region. The temperatures (in Celsius) in summer range from 22° to 26°C in the continental part of the country, 15° to 20°C in the mountain region, and 26° to 30°C in the coastal region.

The most common winds are the north-eastern wind called bura that brings cold weather, the landward breeze called maestral, which announces nice weather and starts blowing at around 11am usually, and there is wind jugo, the humid wind that blows from the southeast.

Location

City if Senj stands on Croatian coastal road between Rijeka and Zadar, the road which connects Rijeka to the rest of the South. The area of ​​the city covers the sea coast in the length of 76 km. Senj is also well connected to the capital of Croatia, Zagreb, and one can reach Zagreb in a glimpse of time, meaning that Senj can also touristically rely on Zagreb main airport. If coming from Slovenia, after the border crossing, direct connection is through Rijeka, which is just 65km away. The closest airport to Senj is Rijeka, Krk Airport, which is 51.28 km away.

City of Senj is situated in the biggest county in Croatia, and majority of the area is covered by Velebit mountain. The closest island to the Senj is Pag. Senj is rather a small town, but this does not make it less important. It has a crucial geolocation considering the connection of the continental and marital part of Croatia. It is in the middle of the crossroads between three strategic cities in Croatia – Zagreb, Rijeka and Split. Town History

Senj is an old settlement which was founded on the hill Kuk, more than 3000 years ago. In the pre-historic times there was a port and a trade center, a place where people coming from different directions could exchange their goods. As the importance of the place grew, the settlers from the hill moved nearer and nearer to the sea forming there a new place, which was mentioned for the 1st time in 4th century B.C. Senj has enormous history, and every single stone tells a story filled with battles, victories, different nations, creating over centuries the most important archeological findings of stone monuments, sculptures of Gods and Goddesses, pieces of architectural works and tomb stones. Some are still preserved, and therefore make a Senj worthwhile visiting for both, domestic and foreign tourists.

Velebit is the most important Croatian mountain, and it divides the area in two parts: continental and maritime. Velebit is also world reservoir of diverse biosphere with two national parks: National Park PAKLENICA and National Park SJEVERNI VELEBIT. Within this natural park there is the biggest reservoir of the quality potable water in Croatia. The importance of the area is also enriched with attractive rivers: Gacka, Lika, Una and Korana.
